The world of sports and especially sports betting comes up with a lot of technical terms. Especially with some betting systems (See Betting Exchanges) it is important that these terms are precisely defined and clarified.
International betting providers often use the English language and terms that have been established for decades. Following you can find many definitions and technical terms in this glossary, so that you are on the safe side.

There are many technical terms in sports betting. Since hardly anyone knows them all, we provide explanations here.
0-9
– 0: 0 or X: Draw.
– 1: Win by the home team or the first team or player listed.
– 2: Win by the away team or the team or player listed second.
– 2-way bet: Bet with 2 possible outcomes (e.g. in tennis – win Federer or win Nadal, there is no draw).
– 3-way bet: Bet with 3 possible outcomes (e.g. in football – win Bayern, draw or win Schalke).
A
– Hedging: Basically, every sports betting fan dreams of more security in betting. Often the term cash out comes into play in the context of hedging. If, for example, you bet on the underdog in a football match and the underdog takes the lead, you often have the chance to get out of the duel. In this case, you are more or less betting on a draw and a victory for the favourite. In the end, no matter how the match between the two opponents ends, you will receive a profit. Of course, this is much lower than if you let the bet run to the end. Often, all you have to do to hedge is press a cash out button and the hedge automatically takes effect. Depending on the current score, you may end up with more or less profit, but the hedge also allows you to minimise any losses that may occur. If, for example, you have bet on a favourite in a duel and the favourite has fallen behind, you can withdraw and use the hedge. In this case you will certainly suffer a loss, but it will be much smaller than if you had let your bet run to the end.
– Accumulator bet: An accumulator bet, is also known as an accumulator. Basically, it is a slightly modified form of the combination bet. The main difference compared to the normal combination bet is that with an accumulator bet a minimum number of individual bets is specified. The number of individual bets that ultimately results in the accumulator bet is determined by the betting provider. In most cases, an accumulator bet consists of at least three or four combined bets. As already mentioned, the minimum number is determined by the betting provider and can usually be found after the bet. (Example +3 or +4).
– Ante Post Bet: English term for long-term bet (e.g. bet on champions 1st Bundesliga or English Premier League).
– Arbitrage: Arbitrage acts as another name for Surebet or Surewin. Here you will draw a profit in any case. In this case, it does not matter what the outcome of your chosen event will be. Arbitrage is aimed at the different opinions of the betting providers. In this way, you bet on the different outcomes of a match with several sports betting providers. Based on the fluctuations in the odds, you will always make a profit, regardless of the final outcome of the match. Since the winnings are usually very low, the betting stakes are higher.
– Asian Handicap: Unlike the normal handicap, there is no whole goal notional lead for a team, but a quarter goal, half goal or three-quarter goal.
This doesn’t look very sensible (any team that beats another with a half-goal lead also wins against one with a quarter-goal lead, but let’s explain in more detail. As with normal handicap betting, the underdog gets a (notional) advantage which is added to the match result at the end.
With the full AHC (0:0 handicap), the bet is also considered a draw even after a drawn match, which means you get your stake back.
With half AHC (+0.5), half a goal is added to the result, so there is no draw.
With quarter AHCs, the stakes are divided. Half the stake actually goes on a whole AHC (0:0) bet, the second half actually goes on a half AHC (+0.5) bet. Now if the favourite wins – you have won the whole bet. If it’s a draw, you get at least half your stake back.
Three-quarter AHCs work in principle like quarter AHCs, but the stake is halved to half an AHC bet and a +1 handicap bet.
– Payout ratio: Payout ratio is also called payout key or odds key. This is the value that the betting provider ultimately pays out again to the players. The rest reflects the margin of the sports betting provider. For example, if you find two odds of 1.95 and 1.95 in tennis, 95 euros of 100 euros will be paid out. The remaining five euros are retained by the online betting provider as a margin.
B
– Back: Term used in dealing with betting exchanges such as Betfair. Bet on the occurrence of a certain event
– Bank: A supposedly very safe bet
– Bet: English for “bet”. “No Bet” in the discussion refers to a game on which it is better not to bet because the outcome is completely open.
– Bookie: Bookmaker, betting office; the company that offers bets at fixed odds.
– Bookie: Firm offering bets at fixed odds. We recommend the best bookmakers
– Bookmaker’s margin: The profit margin, or the bookmaker’s profit, that is calculated into the betting odds. You can work out from the odds how much profit a bookmaker intends to make. For example, in a 2-way bet (e.g. tennis), odds of 1.95 are offered for 2 players of equal value (e.g. Federer and Nadal) for both. 1/1.95=0.5128 (Federer) + 0.5128 (Nadal)= 1.02564 -☻ 1/1.02564 = 0.975 = 97.5%. This means that there is a very small bookmaker margin of 2.5% in these odds. If only 1.80 is offered for the two players, this means a margin of 10%.
C
– Cash-Back: Money back guarantee; e.g. 20% cash back on your first lost bet -☻ if you lose your bet with a stake of 100 EUR, you get 20 EUR back.
D
– Double: Double bet; combination bet of two games, both must be tipped correctly for the bettor to win.
– Double Chance: With this type of bet you can cover two match outcomes in one bet. For example, you bet on 1 and X and thus have a higher chance of winning the bet. However, the odds are usually quite low here.
– Draw No Bet: Bet on the victory of a team, whereby in the event of a draw the bet is not completely lost, but the stake is refunded. Can also be referred to as AHC 0 (Asian Handicap 0). The odds of winning are logically lower, but you have more security.
– Three-way bet: Bet with three possible outcomes (e.g. in football – win Bayern, draw or win Schalke)
– Dutching: means the mathematical method of spreading one’s stakes over several outcomes of a bet in such a way that the winnings are the same, regardless of which of the outcomes eventually wins. In a football match, for example, the odds are: Win Schalke 1.80, Draw 3.30 – I now distribute 100 Euros bet at 65.38 Euros on Win Schalke and 34.62 Euros on Draw. If the match ends in a Schalke win or a draw, I win 17.69 euros in either case. This example could also be replaced by a double chance bet. Dutching is more often used at Betfair Trading (betting exchange) when the odds have changed during the match (e.g. due to a goal) in such a way that I would now like to get out of the bet with a safe profit and therefore place a corresponding further bet.
E
– Deposit bonus: If you deposit money into your betting account with the bookmaker, you will in some cases receive a deposit bonus; for example, you deposit 100 EUR and receive a deposit bonus of 20%, i.e. 20 EUR on top of that.
– Single bet: With a single bet you bet on only one event. You can bet on the win of a sporting event (winner of a race or match) with tip 1 (home win), tip X (or also 0) (draw) or tip 2 (away win). The winnings result from the bet multiplied by the odds. Example: You bet on a home win at Bayern – Bremen, i.e. tip 1. At odds of 1.5 and a stake of 10 EUR, your winnings amount to 15 EUR.
– Event bet: The term event bet is best reflected in the sport of football. For example, it could be a bet that you place on a specific scenario that will occur in a football match. An example would be a corner kick or a free kick or a yellow or red card. You can place event bets in both the pre-play and live betting sections. In the live betting area, you can often follow the match in real time and thus have the opportunity to conclude your next event bet on the basis of the current match events. The numerous online betting providers offer you a large selection of event bets. A differentiation is made between event and result bets. With an outcome bet, you place a sports bet on the final result of a sporting event. In football, for example, you can bet on a team winning at home. For more information, see the definition of a result bet.
– Result bet: With this type of bet you bet on the exact result (e.g. 2:0) of the match. This bet requires a lot of risk, which is rewarded by the fact that the odds are correspondingly high.
– First Goal Scorer: A bet on the first goal scorer within a match. Strikers and defensive players usually have lower odds than defenders or even goalkeepers. The odds of the players of the favoured team are again slightly lower than those of the underdog. For example, Michael Ballack will have lower odds (e.g. 3.20) than Butt(13.40).
F
– Fair odds: In sports betting theory, a betting odds is called “fair odds” if it corresponds exactly to the probability. If the probability of a win is exactly 50%, the fair odds would be 1/50%, i.e. 1/0.5=2.0
– Fantasy bet: This means betting on results that do not actually exist. E.g. on a league weekend the match between Chelsea and Cologne. Both clubs play against a league rival in their respective leagues. The goals scored by Chelsea and Cologne are then taken as the basis as if the clubs had not played against a league rival but against each other. Indirectly, you bet on which of these two clubs will score more goals in the respective league match. This is a very popular form of betting, especially during the summer break and winter break, when the top clubs prepare for future events in friendly matches.
– Financial betting: In a financial bet, you place a sports bet on a specific event or on the value of a security on a specific date or time. You bet that the price of a security or an index will be above or below a certain price at the close of the market. However, you do not participate in stock exchange trading with the bet you have placed. Financial betting is a rising branch that many betting providers offer you. In the meantime, however, there are also a large number of providers who have specialised only in the conclusion of financial bets.
– Free Bet: You receive money from the betting office to bet and do not have the stake deducted from your betting account. If you win, you will of course receive the winnings in full on your betting account.
G
– Gambling: Games of chance are games whose course or outcome is mainly and largely subject to chance. Sports betting is therefore not directly a game of chance, as it is not directly dependent on chance. Because whether a team wins is not only dependent on chance. If, for example, FC Bayern München meets an amateur team, it is already certain before the match kicks off that the German record champion can win this duel in most cases. After all, it is not a coin toss in which the final result is heads or tails. Nevertheless, this definition does not quite seem to apply in the sports betting sector. Even though it is sometimes more than obvious that chance has no influence on the outcome of sports betting, sports betting is defined as gambling according to the State Treaty on Gambling. It has been proven that there are players who make long-term profits in the sports betting industry or even earn their livelihood in this industry. Therefore, it cannot be a pure game of chance. Nevertheless, the component of luck naturally also plays a role in the conclusion of bets.
– Greyhounds: Greyhound or greyhound racing is very popular in England and is also offered in continental Europe. Why do the greyhounds run so fast to the finish? A dummy of a tasty hare is pulled in front of them.
H
– Half time/finish bet: You bet on which team will take the lead and eventually win the game. You can bet on team 1, team 2 or on X (draw). The possible variants are always separated by a ‘/’. The sign on the left is for the half-time score, the sign on the right is for the final score.
– Handicap bet: With this type of bet, a team receives one or more goals ahead, which are added to the regular result at the end of the match. The decisive factor is therefore not the official result, but the result plus the given goals. This form of betting can be particularly interesting if a team is considered to be much stronger. The handicap balances the stronger and weaker teams and thus makes it possible to get better prices on a normally clear favourite or to increase the winning chances of a normally weaker candidate. Example: In the Dortmund – 1860 match, the handicap is set at 0:1. This means that 1860 will start the match with a one-goal lead. Your bet on a draw only wins if the match ends with a 1:0 or any other 1-goal lead victory for Dortmund. However, a bet on 1860 to win already wins if the match actually ends in a draw.
– Head-to-Head: A bet in horse racing, Formula 1 or ski racing where you bet on which of the two starters will finish further ahead. The term Head-2-Head or H2H is also used for comparative statistics between two teams or players.
– Highroller: Weather who plays with very high stakes.
I
– In-Play: The term inplay or in-play betting is used to describe live betting at Betfair.
J
– Juice: American term for the bookmaker margin that is factored into the odds. “No Juice” bets mean that no bookmaker profit is calculated into the odds, such bets are offered by betting providers for promotional purposes.
K
– Kelly System: This system is a unit system. This functions as a very popular money management system in the sports betting sector. The basic idea of this system is to maximise the winnings and on the other hand to minimise the risk to be borne. Basically, the Kelly system, like any other system, requires an extensive analysis of the matches. Based on the analysis, odds are determined on the occurrence of a certain event. This is then compared with the odds provided by the betting provider. The main task is to find the betting odds that have been set too high by the sports betting provider. If this is the case, it is also called a value bet.
Basically, the betting stake is determined by the following formula: Wager = total betting capital * advantage / (odds -1).
The advantage is defined as follows:
ADVANTAGE = ADVANTAGE * QUOTE – 1 Finally, let us briefly run through the whole thing using an example. In the duel between Dortmund and Schalke, the betting provider offers you odds of 1.70 on a Dortmund victory. The probability of a Dortmund victory is 58 per cent (1/odds = 1/1.70 = 0.58). After evaluating your own statistics, however, you come to the conclusion that Dortmund’s probability of winning is 65 per cent. A 65 percent probability of winning can be expressed by a betting ratio of 1.54 (1/assumed probability * 100 = 1/65*100 = 1.54). With a betting capital of 200 euros, the betting stake can be calculated using the Kelly formula as follows:
– Wager = total betting capital * advantage / (odds – 1)
– Wager = total betting capital * (probability * odds -1) / (odds – 1)
– Bet = 200 Euros * (0.65 * 1.70 – 1 / (1.70 – 1)
– Bet = 200 Euro * 0.105 / 0.70
– Wager = 30 euros
This means that you have determined your bet using the Kelly formula or the Kelly system. The final amount of the bet is always determined by the difference between the betting odds given by the bookmaker and the betting odds determined by yourself.
– Combi bet: In a combination bet (also accumulator bet), several different games or betting events (also from different sports) are combined into one bet. A combination bet can increase the winnings considerably, but also involves a higher risk, as all games in a betting series must be predicted correctly. If you make a mistake, the bet is lost. You calculate your winnings by multiplying the odds of the selected games by your stake. Example: 10 EUR on wins Milan 1.7; Bayern 1.5; Paris SG 1.8; Man Utd. 1.3 The total odds are as follows: 10 EUR x 1.7 x 1.5 x 1.8 x 1.3. ends all games as tipped you collect the profit of 59.67 EUR.
L
– Long-term bet: A long-term bet is a bet that is not decided within one day: Betting on the championship title, Champions League victory, top scorer, Wimbledon winner, etc.
– Last Minute Bet: A Last Minute Bet embodies a bet that was only placed immediately before the start of the respective event. Thus, this sports bet is placed at the last minute. Last minute bets are often favoured by odds fluctuations. With some online betting providers, the betting odds increase shortly before the start of the match. This means that it can sometimes be more lucrative to place last-minute bets. However, this varies from betting provider to betting provider.
– Lay: Term from dealing with betting exchanges such as Betfair. Betting against the occurrence of a certain event (e.g. victory of a team). If you bet Lay Bayern, it means you don’t think Bayern will win. In other words, with a Lay bet you slip into the role of the bookmaker and offer a bet on Bayern.
– Livestream: The correct term or translation for the term livestream is real-time transmission. Here, for example, betting providers offer sports events that you can follow in real time on your PC or smartphone or tablet. In this way, you can get an idea of the current events of the respective match on the basis of videos and conclude on your next live bet. Livestreams on other platforms often have a slight delay of a few seconds. This could already be problematic when placing a live bet. Meanwhile, many online betting providers offer you the possibility to watch live streams. You only have to make sure that you have a betting account with the sports betting provider of your choice and that you have often placed a sports bet with them.
– Liveticker: With the help of a liveticker, it is possible for you as a betting friend to receive almost real-time coverage of an event. Especially in the sports betting sector, this coverage plays a very important role. In the meantime, almost all betting providers offer you the possibility of accessing a live ticker. With the help of the live ticker, players can inform themselves about the current events of a sports event. The live ticker shows statistical data on the course of the game. This can include, for example, the number of goals, corner kicks or free kicks as well as red or yellow cards. Based on this data, you can conclude your next live bet. You are therefore no longer forced to watch the entire match on your TV at home. With the mobile versions of the sports betting providers, you can call up the live ticker at any place at any time with your smartphone and are thus always up to date with the latest developments.
– Live betting: Live betting (also TV betting) is offered for special sporting events with TV broadcasting. These are single bets, but with the difference that the odds are constantly changed during the match and you can therefore place bets almost until the end of the match. In addition, unusual bets are offered: Who will kick off? (pure gambling) Who will score the next goal? What is the score at half-time?
– Livescore: Overview of the current scores from one or more leagues. The betting base offers such a live score service under the menu item “Livescore”, which always provides them with up-to-date information on all intermediate scores.
M
– Martingale system: The Martingale system embodies a loss progression. In the context of sports betting, one tries to compensate for losses suffered with this system. The betting strategy has its origins in the casino sector. There it is mainly used for roulette. In the meantime, however, there are also many betting enthusiasts who use the Martingale system in sports betting. The system is quickly internalised and always follows the same principle. After each loss of a sports bet, the following bets are doubled. With a correct tip, you can equalise all previously suffered losses in this way. In addition, you even make a profit. Basically, this system works best with a chance of winning of 50 percent. This means that the betting odds must be 2.00. Of course, you can adjust the stakes accordingly for lower betting odds. However, you should bear in mind that the betting volume will then increase even faster. In order to be able to play the Martingale system at all, you must have a very high basic capital in your betting account. We would like to briefly introduce the system to you using an example. Assume that you play your first bet with a stake of 10 euros. This bet is lost. Since you should only play betting odds of 2.00 or more, you must play the second bet with a stake of 20 euros. If this bet wins, you will have compensated for the loss of 10 euros from the first bet and will have made an additional profit of 10 euros. This may sound very good at first glance. However, take into account that on the third level (if the second bet also loses) you already have to bet 40 euros. The fourth stage involves a bet of 80 euros. If you lose nine bets as a result, you already have to bet 2560 euros to achieve a profit of 10 euros or to compensate for the losses previously suffered. For this reason, it can be stated that the betting volume in the Martingale system shoots up very quickly. The risk of loss increases quickly. After all, you only play bets with a betting ratio of 2.00. After a few unsuccessful bets, the betting volume bears no relation to the possible profit. [Editor’s note: We are against progression strategies, as they carry a relatively high risk of total loss. Please be very careful with such strategies!]
– Money Line Betting: American term for single bets.
– Moneybookers: very convenient payment method – you can deposit money to your Moneybookers account using bank transfer (or also credit card) and use it to make deposits at betting shops or receive withdrawals. You don’t have to give credit card details to the payees – much more secure.
– Money Management: Money management plays a very important role in sports betting and simply describes the management of funds in your betting account. This can also involve the distribution of the balance on several accounts. Furthermore, the determination of the stake amount of each bet falls under money management. Good money management is necessary to successfully place sports bets.
N
– No-bet: Game where the outcome is so uncertain for you that you do not risk a bet.
O
– Oddset: An Oddset bet is a sports bet provided on the basis of fixed (set) betting odds for the betting friend. At the same time, Oddset embodies the brand name of a sports bet by Lotto in Germany.
– Outright bet: An outright bet simply describes the English term for a long-term bet. As the name already suggests, these are sports bets that are placed over a longer period of time. This period can extend over an entire season or an entire competition. Very popular long-term bets, also called “Ante Post Bets” or “Outrights”, are:
– Who will be the top scorer?
– Who will win the championship?
– Who will be promoted/relegated?
– Over: A type of bet that has become increasingly popular recently. Here the number of goals per match is in demand. If more than 2.5 goals are scored (e.g. 3:0, 2:1) it is called Over, if less than 2.5 (e.g. 0:0, 0:1, 2:0) it is called Under. Example: Match under over Hertha – HSV 1.7 1.9. If you bet 10 EUR on over, you will receive 19 EUR with a 2:1 result.
P
– Pick: English for betting tip.
– Place bet: In races (e.g. horse, ski or Formula 1 races), in addition to the win bet, you can also bet that the horse or driver will finish in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
– Progression or win progression/loss progression: Progression finds its origin in the casino area. It was often used in roulette. Here, for example, you bet on black until black has finally fallen. You start with the lowest possible bet in order to have a lot of room to move up. In the meantime, progression is also often used in sports betting. In general, one differentiates between several different types of progression. The basic distinction is between loss and profit progression. In the case of loss progression, the betting stakes are adjusted accordingly in the event of a loss. In this way, one wants to compensate for the losses previously suffered. In the case of loss progression, however, the betting stakes quickly rise to immeasurable levels. After all, as a gambler, you have to make up for the losses you have suffered before. The profit progression reflects the exact opposite of the loss progression. Here, the betting stakes are only increased in the event of a win. Thus, in the case of profit progression, high profits can be achieved by exploiting successful bets. You act primarily with the money from the betting provider. You have achieved this through your previously won bets. If, on the other hand, you lose a bet, only the basic stake is lost. This significantly minimises the probability of a total loss. The following systems are examples of loss progression: D’Alambert, Martingale, Super Martingale and Fibonacci. Profit progression is also known as paroli. [Editor’s note: We are against progression strategies as they carry a relatively high risk of total loss. Please be very careful with such strategies!]
– Punter: English for sports bettor, gambler, gambler.
Q
– Odds: Odds (betting odds) are the relative profit that can be made on a winning bet. The bookmaker tries to estimate the probabilities for a betting event (e.g. Schalke against Leverkusen) and expresses these in odds. The bettor knows in advance how high his profit will be in relation to the stake. The betting odds are presented as follows: Bayern – Bremen 1.6 – 2.5 – 3.1 means A (successful) bet on Bayern to win multiplies the stake by 1.6, draw by 2.5, Bremen to win by 3.1.
– Odds Key: In the so-called odds key you can calculate how high the planned margin of a bookmaker is for an offered bet. For a 3-way bet, the formula 1 divided by (1 / odds win1 + 1 / odds draw + 1 / odds win2) * 100 can be used to calculate the percentage at which the bookmaker will pay out the stakes again if the bets are accepted ideally. The value is normally 90-95%, which means that on average between 5 and 10% of the stakes remain as a profit margin for the bookmaker. A value of 100% would mean “fair odds”. The term payout key is also used for odds key.
R
– Result bet: With this type of bet you bet on the exact result (e.g. 2:1) of the match. Other word for result bet
– Rollover: Denotes turnover conditions for sports betting bonus offers. You get a new customer bonus when you open a customer account with many betting providers. However, you must then wager this bonus a few times (possibly at certain minimum odds) and these conditions are called rollover conditions.
S
– Win bet: A bet on a team to win a game, or on an individual athlete or horse to win a race.
– Skrill: new brand name from Moneybookers – very convenient, fast and secure online payment method.
– Special bet: Special bets can be found in every sport. Basically, it can be stated that they are tailored to the respective sports. The largest selection of special bets can of course be found in the area of football. For example, you can bet on the time of the next goal or on the number of goals in the next few minutes. On the other hand, Formula 1 also offers special bets. One such bet could be, for example, the determination of the first driver at the pit stop. In tennis, a special bet could be characterised by the prediction of the number of sets played. As you can easily see, you are offered a very wide range of special bets. There are hardly any limits to the choice. The special bets also include: TV bets, political bets or social bets.
– Sports betting licence: The German State Treaty on Gambling stipulates that sports betting in Germany may only be made available by betting providers who have the appropriate licence. Basically, only betting providers with a valid sports betting licence in Germany are allowed to distribute their betting offers. In Germany, 20 licences have already been issued. However, a large number of large sports betting providers came away empty-handed and filed a complaint against the awarding process. So far, the legal situation is more than opaque.
– Spread bet: Spreads or spread bets are classic American bets in which teams are fictitiously given an advantage. A lead is added to the actual result or a deficit is subtracted. Example: The L.A. Lakers play the Dallas Mavericks. The bookmakers give the visitors a 6-point lead. The home team, on the other hand, is given a 6-point handicap. If the game ends with a 99:94 win for Dallas, you have won your bet if you bet on the Lakers (because 6 are added to the 94 points scored)!
– Sports Betting Articles: Interesting articles and press releases about sports betting are available for reading e.g. under Articles about Sports Betting, Sports Betting Articles, Betting Articles and under Articles and Press Releases.
– Stake: English for “stake” – indication of the stake amount of a bet.
– Supertoto: Is offered by several betting providers together (e.g. Expekt, Unibet, …), you bet on 14 prescribed games from the weekend and receive a payout from the total stake pool when you reach the winning ranks, just like in classic Toto.
– Sure Bets: Sure Bets or Arbitrage Bets are the bets that are assessed differently by individual betting offices. By cleverly betting a game with different outcomes at different bookies with different stakes, it is possible to make a sure profit. Not only for Surebets, but also in general it is advisable to have an account with several bookmakers in order to take advantage of different odds.
– System bet: The possibility to bet several combinations of the selected teams or events on one betting slip. If, for example, you have tipped 3 teams and select the system 2 out of 3, these are all the possibilities of combining 2 of these 3 teams with each other. These are 3 possibilities, so with a single stake per bet of 10 EUR, the total stake is 30 EUR. With a system bet, the risk of losing the stake is reduced because you can afford to make mistakes.
